Boolean laws and Karnaugh maps
Simplify without changing any input assignment
- Boolean and set correspondence Union/or, intersection/and, complement/not, empty set/0 and universe/1 obey the same laws. Keep the universe fixed
- Two distributive laws Both forms hold in Boolean algebra \(\displaystyle P(Q+R)=PQ+PR,\quad P+QR=(P+Q)(P+R)\)
- Absorption and De Morgan Remove redundant terms; when complementing a compound, swap sum and product and complement its inputs \(\displaystyle P+PQ=P,\quad\overline{P+Q}=\overline P\,\overline Q\)
- Map labels Two-input maps use 0, 1 column order. Three-input maps use 00, 01, 11, 10. Boundary columns are neighbours
- Group and cover Use power-of-two rectangles containing only ones. Overlap and boundary wrapping are allowed. Cover every one; keep constant literals and drop changing inputs
- Evidence limit Finite completion and recognition activities do not establish independent simplification or proof. Written tasks and models are available without automatic grading
Worked example
Simplify a function whose only true two-input assignments are 00 and 01. Check it by algebra and a map
- \(\displaystyle F=\overline P(\overline Q+Q)\)Factor out the common literal using distributivity
- \(\displaystyle F=\overline P\cdot1=\overline P\)Use complement and identity laws
- \(\displaystyle \begin{array}{c|cc}P\backslash Q&0&1\\\hline0&1&1\\1&0&0\end{array}\)The two ones form one row. Q varies while P remains 0, confirming the same product

Questions about this topic
Can I use a different minimum expression?+
Yes in independent written work: prove it has the same truth function and meets the minimum criterion. Each finite choice activity includes exactly one equivalent option; the lesson also models two different minimum answers
Must groups be disjoint?+
No. Reusing a one-cell is allowed. Every one must be covered, and no chosen group may include a zero
Why are there no don’t-care entries?+
Every assignment in these activities has a specified output. Treating a zero as unspecified would change the problem
Why is there no automatic proof score?+
Entries and selected expressions show only bounded objective work. The independent algebra, map construction and explanation tasks have model solutions but are ungraded
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 3: Logic and algorithms
