Lattice-target investigation
Define the event, count its ordered outcomes, then compare independent empirical evidence
- Outcome Under the uniform independent model, an ordered direction sequence has probability one divided by four to the power of the step count
- Endpoint Add step vectors or complex steps; capture includes the boundary when the squared step length times the sum of the squared endpoint coordinates does not exceed the squared target radius
- Exact count Use a fresh next-step table and sum previous neighbour counts
- Simulation Record independent repeated walks and compare their relative frequency with the exact model;execution remains ungraded
Worked example
Find exact capture and conditional capture after two unit steps with target radius√2 and B={x≥0}
- \(\displaystyle N(A)=4+4\times2=12,\quad\Pr(A)=3/4\)Origin plus the four diagonal boundary points
- \(\displaystyle N(B)=6+5=11,\quad N(A\cap B)=4+4=8\)The vertical axis is included in the conditioning event
- \(\displaystyle \Pr(A\mid B)=8/11\)Condition on B,not on the whole sample space or on A.

Questions about this topic
Are outcomes paths or endpoints?+
The equally likely elementary outcomes are ordered direction sequences;endpoint probabilities are sums over those paths
Is a target of radius0 allowed?+
Yes. It is the singleton origin;capture then means returning exactly to the start
Must my simulation match the exact value?+
No. Quantify its discrepancy, check the implementation and discuss sampling variation
Which investigation tasks are ungraded?+
Independent formulation, proof, technology work and the written report are ungraded
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 11: Unit 2 investigation
