Expected value of a finite distribution
Check probabilities before computing the weighted mean
- Validity pᵢ≥0 and Σpᵢ=1.
- Mean E(X)=Σxᵢpᵢ; retain the probability paired with each value
- Interpretation Same units as X; it need not be a possible outcome
- Bounds The mean lies between the smallest and largest positive-probability values
Worked example
A score X takes 0, 2 and 5 with probabilities one half, one third and one sixth, respectively. Find its mean
- \(\displaystyle E(X)=\frac46+\frac56=\frac32\)The weighted mean is 1.5 score units, which is not a possible score

Questions about this topic
Does the mean have to be an integer for a count variable?+
No. It averages possible counts using probabilities, so it may be fractional
Is an observed average enough to establish the distribution?+
No. A model needs a justified outcome space, probabilities and appropriate evidence
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 6: Random variables and sampling
