Planar embeddings and graph families
A graph is planar if a crossing-free embedding exists. Recognition, construction and proof are different demands
- Preserve the graph Move vertices or bend edges without adding, deleting or identifying vertices or edges
- K1 through K4 Embed K4 as a triangle with one interior vertex; the smaller complete graphs are subgraphs
- K2,n and K1,n For K2,n, place the two hubs on opposite sides of a middle line and draw two noncrossing fans. Delete one hub and its edges for K1,n
- All finite trees Induct on vertex count using a leaf and local reattachment in an empty sector
- Limits of automatic practice The retained generator compares supplied drawings of planar graphs. It neither grades independent embeddings nor proves non-planarity
Worked example
Explain why K2,5 has a planar embedding, regardless of whether a particular circular drawing crosses
- \(\displaystyle V_1=\{P,Q\}\)Place P to the left of a vertical line and Q to the right
- \(\displaystyle V_2=\{A,B,C,D,E\}\)Put five distinct vertices on the middle line
- \(\displaystyle e=2\times5=10\)Join each hub to all five middle vertices. Each half-plane contains a noncrossing fan; the halves meet only at the middle endpoints
- \(\displaystyle K_{2,5}\text{ is planar}\)Exactly the ten required edges are drawn, so this construction proves existence. A different crossing drawing does not refute it

Questions about this topic
What is the difference between planar and in planar form?+
A drawing is in planar form when its edges do not cross except at vertices. A graph is planar when at least one possible drawing of it is in planar form
How can you tell whether two straight chords cross on a circle?+
List the four endpoints in circular order. The chords cross when the endpoints of one chord separate the endpoints of the other, so the endpoints alternate
Can a drawing with a crossing represent a planar graph?+
Yes. The drawing is not in planar form, but changing the vertex order or redrawing the same connections may remove the crossing
Are curved edges allowed?+
Yes. Planarity requires some crossing-free drawing, not necessarily the circular straight-line drawing first supplied
Why can the tree leaf be attached safely?+
Only finitely many edges meet its neighbour. Choose a small empty sector near that neighbour, away from other vertices and nonincident edges, and put the new leaf and edge there
Does a correct choice prove I can draw the graph?+
No. Recognition is automatically checked. Independent embedding and full proof are separate ungraded paper tasks with models
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 2: Graph theory
