Ideal logic circuits
Trace signals in order and verify equivalence over all assignments
- Gate meanings AND requires both; OR is inclusive; NOT reverses; NAND complements AND; NOR complements OR
- Wiring Arrows name source-to-port connections. A branch copies a signal. Unmarked crossings do not join wires. Tied ports receive the same input
- Translate and construct Write equations for intermediate outputs. Substitute to obtain the final expression; reverse the process to build a circuit
- Universal gates Tied NAND or NOR gives NOT. Either gate type alone can implement NOT, AND and OR, hence any finite circuit formed from those operations
- Equivalence and limits Check all input assignments or use a proof. A finite trace or selected expression does not establish independent circuit drawing, simulation or proof
Worked example
Trace and simplify X = OR(P,Q), Y = OR(P,R), F = AND(X,Y). First use P = 0, Q = 1 and R = 0.
- \(\displaystyle X=0+1=1,\quad Y=0+0=0\)Inclusive OR is applied separately at the two first gates
- \(\displaystyle F=XY=1\cdot0=0\)The final AND receives both intermediate values
- \(\displaystyle (P+Q)(P+R)=P+QR\)The Boolean identity holds for every assignment, not just this trace
- \(\displaystyle F=0+(1\cdot0)=0\)The simpler expression agrees on this row; the identity justifies all rows

Questions about this topic
Are the circles conventional gate symbols?+
No. They label signals and gate outputs in a directed schematic. The gate table specifies the operation and input ports, so the logic is unambiguous without relying on an outline
Can a signal feed several ports?+
Yes in this ideal model. Every port receives the same current value. No physical loading or delay is modelled
Can equivalent circuits have different internal values?+
Yes. Equivalence concerns the final output for every primary-input assignment, not matching intermediate labels
Is independent design automatically marked?+
No. The bank checks supplied gate traces and expression recognition. Independent drawings, redesign, simulation and proofs have ungraded tasks and model solutions
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 3: Logic and algorithms
