Explicit Euler method
Choose the grid, evaluate at the old point and track the approximation error
- Step y[n+1]=y[n]+h f(x[n],y[n]), x[n+1]=x[n]+h.
- Grid N updates give N+1 points. Compare refinements at the same endpoint
- Error One-step value defect O(h²), global O(h) under appropriate smoothness and stability assumptions
- Limits Check arithmetic, domain and physical interpretation separately
Worked example
Apply two Euler steps to y′=x+y, y(0)=1 with h=1/2.
- \(\displaystyle y_1=1+\frac12(0+1)=\frac32\)Use the initial slope
- \(\displaystyle y_2=\frac32+\frac12\left(\frac12+\frac32\right)=\frac52\)Recompute at the first approximate point
- \(\displaystyle y(1)=2e-2\ne\frac52\)The exact endpoint is a separate reference

Questions about this topic
Must a smaller h always improve every result?+
No. Convergence statements need assumptions; stability and floating arithmetic also matter
Does Euler preserve positivity?+
Not for every equation and step size. Compare the recurrence with the physical domain
Is my own code automatically graded?+
No. The provided bounded traces are objective checks; independent implementation and justification are ungraded
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 6: Differential equations and rectilinear motion
