Geometric models before time rates
State which quantities are linked before differentiating
- Fixed cone Use r/h=R/H while the horizontal surface remains inside the cone
- Similar cylinders Use a fixed h/r only when similarity is explicitly assumed
- Time chain dV/dt=(dV/dh)(dh/dt), with signed rates and consistent units
Worked example
A cone hasR=6cm,H=9cm. At h=3cm,dh/dt=−1/5cm/s. Find dV/dt
- \(\displaystyle \frac{dV}{dh}=\frac{4\pi}{9}h^2=4\pi\)This is volume per unit depth at the instant
- \(\displaystyle \frac{dV}{dt}=4\pi\left(-\frac15\right)=-\frac{4\pi}{5}\ \mathrm{cm^3/s}\)Multiply by the signed depth rate
