Implicit differentiation and related rates
Keep dependent variables and the independent variable explicit
- Implicit chain Differentiate every y(x) contribution, collect y′, then divide only when its coefficient is nonzero
- Regular tangent Gx+Gy y′=0 gives a finite slope when Gy≠0. A regular point with Gy=0 has a vertical tangent
- Time rates Differentiate the relation in t before substituting instantaneous values; retain every changing dimension
- Validity Use signed rates, consistent units and a configuration where the stated geometric assumptions hold
Worked example
Find the tangent gradient to xy²+x²+2y=9 at(1,2)
- \(\displaystyle (2xy+2)y\prime=-(y^2+2x)\)Collect all y′ contributions
- \(\displaystyle y\prime=-\frac{6}{6}=-1\)The point satisfies the original curve and the denominator is nonzero

Questions about this topic
Can a curve have a tangent when dy/dx is undefined?+
Yes, for example a regular vertical tangent. A singular point needs separate analysis
Why must time-dependent products retain both terms?+
Each changing factor contributes to the total instantaneous change
Does zero net volume rate mean nothing moves?+
No. Opposing nonzero contributions can cancel at an instant
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 4: Differential calculus
