Model changes and interpretation
A useful model states its rate rule, initial data, domain and the meaning of each output
- Mixing V′=q_in−q_out; use the current volume in outflow concentration
- Logistic curvature y″=r²y(1−y/K)(1−2y/K).
- Relative position L=x_A(T)−x_B(T); only L=0 gives a collision at that time
Worked example
For K=60,r=1/2,y(0)=15, find when y=40 and the curvature then
- \(\displaystyle 3e^{-t/2}=1/2\implies t=2\ln6\)The target is between the initial population and carrying capacity
- \(\displaystyle y''=\frac14(40)(1/3)(-1/3)=-10/9\)Population is increasing with decreasing growth rate

Questions about this topic
Can a model be continued beyond an empty tank?+
The positive-volume equation is undefined there. A new physical model and domain are required
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 9: Integrated assessment practice
