Coupled geometric constraints
Keep the signed projection for the foot, both distance branches and matched motion parameters
- Distance For a nonzero normal \(\displaystyle \frac{|\mathbf n\cdot P-d|}{|\mathbf n|}\)
- Foot Subtract the normal component \(\displaystyle H=P-\frac{\mathbf n\cdot P-d}{|\mathbf n|^2}\mathbf n\)
- Collision Positions agree at the same allowed time
- Orthogonality Nonzero velocity vectors have dot product0.
Worked example
Find parameters at distance 2 from2x−3y+6z=3 for P=(1+λ,2,0)
- \(\displaystyle |2\lambda-7|=14\)Multiply the unsigned distance by the normal length
- \(\displaystyle \lambda=-7/2\quad\text{or}\quad21/2\)Solve both signs and retain both allowed parameters

Questions about this topic
Does the generated line include the parallel-normal degeneracy?+
Its normal dot direction is nonzero. The ungraded model explains the constant-distance case separately
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 9: Integrated assessment practice
