Choose the local geometric element
Fix the axis and interval, then check radius, derivative factor and repeated coverage
- Volume Integrate π(R²-r²) against axial thickness; R≥r≥0.
- Length Integrate the norm of the parameter derivative
- Surface Integrate 2π times nonnegative radius times arc-length element
- Coverage A parameter integral can count repeated paths or surface patches more than once
Worked example
Find the lateral surface generated by y=1+3 x/4, 0≤x≤4, about x.
- \(\displaystyle \frac{ds}{dx}=\frac54\)Use the slant factor, not just dx
- \(\displaystyle A=\frac{5\pi}{2}\left[x+\frac38x^2\right]_0^4=25\pi\)The radius is positive and the segment generates the lateral surface once
- \(\displaystyle A_{\rm closed}=25\pi+\pi+16\pi=42\pi\)Add these caps only for the closed boundary

Questions about this topic
Must x be monotone to calculate parametric arc length?+
No. Integrate speed over the interval and check whether the path is retraced
Can I always integrate disk volumes along a folding parameter curve?+
No. First identify the actual region and axial cross-sections; overlapping slices must not be counted twice
Does a surface integral automatically include end caps?+
No. It gives the swept surface. Include separate caps only when the question asks for them
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 5: Integral calculus
