Continuous logistic models
Fix the coefficient convention before solving or interpreting the rate
- Model P′=rP(1-P/K), with r,K>0.
- Equilibria P=0 and P=K are separate constant solutions
- Positive initial value P=K/(1+A e^(-rt)), A=K/P0-1.
- Maximum total rate At P=K/2, the rate is rK/4.
- Scope Check domains, reachable targets and fixed-parameter assumptions
Worked example
Solve P′=(1/2)P(1-P/120), P(0)=30.
- \(\displaystyle P(t)=\frac{120}{1+A e^{-t/2}}\)Separate non-equilibrium branches; check 0 and 120 separately
- \(\displaystyle 30=\frac{120}{1+A}\quad\Rightarrow\quad A=3\)Impose the positive initial value
- \(\displaystyle P(t)=\frac{120}{1+3e^{-t/2}}\)Differentiate to verify and retain the positive denominator

Questions about this topic
Is carrying capacity always an upper bound on an initial value?+
No. The ideal equation allows a positive start above K, which decreases toward K for forward time
Does the logistic differential equation equal a discrete recurrence?+
No. A numerical step or discrete population rule is a different model or approximation
Does a good fit prove constant carrying capacity?+
No. Test the assumption against independent data and changing conditions
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 6: Differential equations and rectilinear motion
