Rectilinear differential-equation motion
Use a suitable independent variable and keep the sign and domain
- Definitions v=dx/dt, a=dv/dt, speed=|v|
- Position form On a valid differentiable branch, a=v dv/dx=d(v²/2)/dx
- Distance Integrate |v|, splitting at sign changes
- Branches v² does not select a velocity sign; retain the initial direction and handle turns
- Original equation Check zero equilibria and singular endpoints in the original rate rule
Worked example
For v′=(1/2)(2-v), v(0)=-4, x(0)=0, find the reversal and distance to 4ln3.
- \(\displaystyle v=2-6e^{-t/2},\quad x=2t-12(1-e^{-t/2})\)Impose both initial conditions
- \(\displaystyle t_*=2\ln3,\quad x_*=4\ln3-8\)Velocity changes from negative to positive
- \(\displaystyle D=x(4\ln3)-2x_* =\frac{16}{3}\)Split the path at the reversal
