Constant relative motion
Use one compatible frame and a common physical time
- Relative vectors Subtract observer from target
- Collision All coordinates must agree at the same allowed time
- Closest approach Minimise squared separation and respect the time interval; handle zero relative velocity separately
Worked example
Find future closest approach for the relative position below
- \(\displaystyle t_{\min}=3,\quad d_{\min}^2=4\)The squared term is minimised at an allowed time
- \(\displaystyle d_{\min}=2>0\)There is no point-particle collision
