Inverse trigonometric values
The named function and angle unit are part of the calculation
- Match the inverse Use inverse sine, cosine or tangent to recover an angle from the corresponding ratio \(\displaystyle θ=\sin^{-1}(v)\)
- Check the domain For an acute angle, sine and cosine values lie strictly between zero and one. Tangent is positive and has no upper bound
- Round once Keep the full input value and use degree mode. Round only the resulting angle
Worked example
An acute angle has tangent 1.6. Find it to one decimal place
- \(\displaystyle θ=\tan^{-1}(1.6)\)Choose inverse tangent and degree mode
- \(\displaystyle θ=57.994616\ldots^{\circ}\)Keep the full calculator result
- \(\displaystyle θ\approx58.0^{\circ}\)One decimal place includes the final zero

Questions about this topic
What does degree mode do?+
For a forward calculation, it interprets the input angle in degrees. For an inverse calculation, it reports the recovered angle in degrees
Does the superscript −1 mean reciprocal?+
No. Inverse sine, cosine and tangent recover an angle from a ratio. Taking a reciprocal does not perform that inverse operation
Can the stated ratio exceed 1?+
For an acute angle, sine and cosine lie between 0 and 1. Tangent is positive and can exceed 1: tan 45° = 1 and tan⁻¹(2) is about 63.4°
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 10 Mathematics, chapter 9: Pythagoras and trigonometry
