Account protection and required checks
A username identifies the account. Authentication checks evidence. This model compares a password-only requirement with a password-and-key requirement
- Name is not proof A username identifies the account being claimed. Authentication checks evidence for that claim. A known account name is not a secret password
- Count different categories A password or PIN tests knowledge. Successful use of a registered key tests possession. Fingerprint or face matching is biometric. Two checks in one category are not two different factors
- Read what is required In this model, every required check must pass. With password and key required, either failed check blocks sign-in. A key check marked Not required does not block password-only sign-in
- Test an absolute claim A counterexample is one case that makes a claim false. Passing a check shows that its evidence was accepted, not that the person must be the rightful owner
Worked example
Compare password-only sign-in with sign-in requiring both password and registered key. The person's check results stay the same
| Check | Result |
|---|---|
| Password | Passed |
| Registered key | Passed |
Which comparison follows?
Password only: the password check passes, so the required check is complete
Password and key: both checks pass
Changing the requirement does not change what checks the person can complete
Answer: Passes the checks under both policies

Questions about this topic
Is this a real sign-in?+
No. The controls change supplied check results in a classroom model. Never enter your real password, code or account information here
Does holding any security key pass the key check?+
No. It must be the account's registered key and used successfully, including any activation it needs. We classify the named checks; real authenticators can combine several checks
Does MFA prevent every attack?+
No. It can add protection when one secret is compromised, but methods and attacks differ. Passing checks is not a guarantee of rightful ownership. This model does not represent all real sign-in or recovery rules
Are these unlimited cases or a complete security assessment?+
No. There are 24 fixed practice cases, eight per tier. Shuffled options add no new case. These choices do not assess real account setup, an independent explanation or a programming project
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 7 Digital Technologies, chapter 1: Digital systems
