Read composition and representation
Use the atom labels, connections and stated counting rule
- Element or compound An element contains one atom type; a compound has chemically combined elements in a fixed composition. Some elements and some compounds have molecular particles
- Molecule or sample A molecular formula describes one molecule. Repeating it changes the sample count, not the composition of each molecule
- Mixture A mixture contains more than one substance together; these particles need not be joined into one molecule
- Model limits Symbols and connections convey composition; schematic colours, sizes, spacing and sample counts do not measure a bulk substance

Questions about this topic
Is every molecule a compound?+
No, oxygen molecules contain only oxygen atoms and belong to an element
Does every compound have molecules?+
No, some compounds have extended nonmolecular structures; this catalogue does not show them
Does selecting a formula assess my own written formula?+
No, selecting a displayed option is recognition; the independent notation and model-construction task needs separate checking
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 7 Science, chapter 3: Chemical sciences
