Forces and changes in motion
Current motion and force direction are different information. Use both, with the stated model and time interval
- Balance Equal opposite forces on one target balance. Neither individual force has to be zero
- Unchanged motion If all forces balance, an object stays at rest or keeps moving at the same speed and direction
- Initial change An unbalanced effect with current travel increases speed. One against travel initially reduces speed. From rest, it starts motion in its direction
- Stopping and reversal If an opposing effect continues, an object can slow, stop momentarily and then move the other way. Zero speed at one instant does not prove balanced forces
- Changed conditions When forces become balanced, the object keeps its current motion. It does not automatically stop or recover an earlier speed
Worked example
The cart is on a level track. Gravity and support balance and are not drawn. Ignore horizontal resistance. The cart was slowing while moving right. Before it stops, the cable pulls are changed to 3 N each and then held equal. The diagram shows these new pulls
What happens after the cable pulls become equal?
The new equal and opposite pulls balance, so they stop changing the motion
The cart continues at its current speed and direction. Balance neither removes existing motion nor restores a past speed

Questions about this topic
Why do real carts stop if moving does not require a forward push?+
Rolling resistance and air resistance can oppose motion. The displayed model explicitly neglects horizontal resistance so that the effect of the stated cable pulls can be isolated
Can forces balance while an object is moving?+
Yes. Balance preserves current speed and direction. It means no change of straight-line motion, not necessarily no motion
Does a leftward force always mean leftward travel?+
No. A cart travelling right can have a stronger leftward effect and initially slow while still moving right. If that effect continues, it can later stop and reverse
Does being at rest prove that forces balance?+
No. An object can be at rest for an instant during a change of direction. Inspect its forces and what happens over time, not only its speed at one instant
Is position the same as distance travelled?+
No. Position says where the cart centre is on the marked track. A cart can return to an earlier position after travelling out and back. Its total distance travelled is then not zero
Must I calculate the displayed motion?+
No. Compare the supplied positions, speeds and directions. Quantitative force–mass equations are not required here
Do these choices assess a full scientific explanation?+
No. They assess constrained predictions from supplied information. Independent written explanation, practical investigation and drawing need separate work; sixteen fixed questions do not establish unlimited independent practice or mastery
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 7 Science, chapter 4: Physical sciences
