Use mass per unit volume
State the measured quantity, unit and conditions
- Density Divide mass by the corresponding volume; grams per cubic centimetre is a mass-per-volume unit
- Compare fairly For equal volumes compare masses; for equal masses compare volumes; otherwise compare the ratios
- Sample amount Uniform samples of one material at matched conditions keep the same density when mass and volume scale together
- Units One millilitre equals one cubic centimetre, and one kilogram equals one thousand grams
- Other quantities Mass is density times volume; volume is mass divided by density
- Limits Check temperature, pressure, sample boundaries, measurement method and the particle key before extending a claim

Questions about this topic
Does cutting a uniform sample in half halve its density?+
Not if its composition and conditions stay the same: mass and volume halve together, leaving their ratio unchanged
Is a thick-flowing liquid necessarily denser?+
No, viscosity describes resistance to flow while density describes mass per unit volume; they need different evidence
Does this lesson assess a real density experiment?+
No, the measurements are supplied; actual equipment use, safe technique and independent experimental reporting require separate assessment
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 7 Science, chapter 3: Chemical sciences
