Develop and test a paired key
Use clear recorded features and test the collection the key is intended to cover
- Useful difference A feature separates records only when their values differ. Either feature may work; sometimes neither available feature is enough
- One route Check both alternatives for each record. Both matches mean overlap; neither match means omission. A pair may have both faults
- Later steps Consider only the records reaching that step. Repeating their shared feature cannot separate them
- Retest Every reference needs a supported route to a separate endpoint. Retest the whole collection after a change
Worked example
Use these recorded leaf features. The reference codes label simplified models, not species
| Code | Edge | Outline |
|---|---|---|
| K | toothed | unlobed |
| M | smooth | unlobed |
| J | toothed | lobed |
| L | smooth | lobed |
| Choice | Feature | Instruction |
|---|---|---|
| 1a | smooth edge | Go to step 2 |
| 1b | toothed edge | Go to step 3 |
| 2a | smooth edge | Stop here |
| 2b | toothed edge | Stop here |
| 3a | unlobed outline | Stop here |
| 3b | lobed outline | Stop here |
Each row at steps 2 and 3 is a separate endpoint. In a draft, more than one reference may finish at the same row
Keep step 1 unchanged. Which later steps must switch to the other recorded feature so that each reference reaches a different endpoint?
Test every reference Record Route K 1b, then 3a M 1a, then 2a J 1b, then 3b L 1a, then 2a Step 2 receives M and L and tests edge. Both finish at 2a, so they remain together. Switch this pair to outline: M finishes at 2a; L finishes at 2b
Step 3 receives J and K and tests outline. They finish at 3b and 3a, so this pair already separates them. Keep its feature
Switch step 2. The resulting key gives each of the four records a separate endpoint

Questions about this topic
Must a paired key divide a collection into equal groups?+
No. Each alternative needs a clear meaning for the records it is intended to cover. Equal group sizes are not a requirement
Can two different keys both work?+
Yes. Different useful first features can lead to different routes. Test that each complete key gives the supplied records supported, separate endpoints
Does the finite activity assess independent key construction?+
Not fully. It rehearses choosing and testing supplied distinctions. Real observation, new feature selection, unrestricted construction, written explanation and independent peer use need additional assessment
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 7 Science, chapter 2: Biological sciences
