Direct solid and gas changes
Use the initial state, final state and any intermediate stages to identify the path
- Direct changes Sublimation is solid to gas. Deposition is gas to solid. Both go directly, without a liquid stage
- Particle explanation The substance and individual particle size stay the same. Solid particles vibrate near positions; gas particles are more separated and move through the region
- Energy Sublimation requires energy to separate particles against attractions. Deposition transfers energy out to the surroundings as the solid forms
- Observation and inference A disappearing solid does not alone prove sublimation. An icy endpoint might have formed by deposition or by condensation and freezing. Record the path and conditions

Questions about this topic
Is dry ice frozen water?+
No. Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide. At ordinary atmospheric pressure it becomes carbon dioxide gas directly. The gas is invisible; visible fog can contain tiny liquid water droplets
Do the snapshots show measured speed?+
No. They are illustrative arrangements of selected particles, with no calibrated times or distances. They are not measurements of rate, temperature, pressure or density
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 7 Science, chapter 3: Chemical sciences
