Identify a force interaction
Focus on the particular force named in the question. Use source → receiving object, then classify the interaction
- Source and receiver In a cable pull on a cart, the cable exerts the force and the cart receives it. A force on the cable is a different interaction
- Contact The interacting objects touch: for example a hand and ball, a shelf and book, or air and a sail
- Non-contact Gravity and magnetic forces can act across a gap. Not every metal is attracted strongly to a magnet; use the material and observation given
- Arrow convention The arrow points in the force direction. On a fixed scale, a longer arrow means a stronger force, not a longer journey
- Do not infer motion A stationary object can experience forces. An upward-moving ball still experiences downward gravity after it leaves the hand
Worked example
A rope is tied to a trolley. A student's hand pulls the other end. The taut rope pulls the trolley towards the student; the hand does not touch the trolley
Consider the pull towards the student acting on the trolley. Which object exerts this force?
For the force named here, the source is the rope and the receiving object is the trolley
The rope is in contact with the trolley and pulls it. The student's hand pulls the rope; it does not apply this force directly to the trolley

Questions about this topic
Can a force act when an object is not moving?+
Yes. A shelf supports a stationary book. Whether forces balance and what happens to motion are the next topics
Does moving upward make gravity point upward?+
No. Earth’s gravitational pull is downward near the ground, even while the ball is travelling upward
Does air exert a non-contact force because I cannot see it?+
No. Air touches an object when it pushes against it. Visibility does not decide contact
What do the automatic checks assess?+
They check constrained identification and classifications. They do not assess independently drawn force diagrams, your own written explanation or a practical investigation
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 7 Science, chapter 4: Physical sciences
