Plant transport routes
Name the substance, the tissue and the source and destination
- Xylem Carries water and mineral ions from roots towards the shoot through connected pathways
- Phloem Carries sugars from a supplying source to a using or storing sink; the route need not be downwards
- Stomata Open pores allow gas exchange and water vapour loss; closure restricts both routes through them

Questions about this topic
Is a root hair the entire water pipe to a leaf?+
No; it is an extension of one cell at the root surface, and water crosses tissues before entering xylem
Does closing stomata help with every plant need at once?+
No; reduced water loss comes with reduced carbon dioxide entry through those pores
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 8 Science, chapter 1: Biological sciences
