Evaluating by substitution
Substitution replaces a pronumeral with an assigned value. It does not change the expression's operations. An exact answer has not been rounded
- Replace every occurrence The assigned value applies to every occurrence of its pronumeral \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}u=-4\\5u-u=5(-4)-(-4)\end{gathered}\)
- Preserve the base Bracket a negative substituted value before applying a power. A coefficient outside the power is a separate factor \(\displaystyle 6(-4)^2=6\times16\)
- Respect each group Evaluate a bracket, numerator or denominator as a complete quantity. Within it, evaluate powers, then products and quotients, then sums and differences \(\displaystyle \frac{(-4)^2+2}{4+2}\)
- Keep exact fractions Use a fraction when a decimal would require rounding. A terminating decimal may also be exact \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}\frac{11}{4}=2.75\\\frac{2}{7}\approx0.286\end{gathered}\)
Worked example
Evaluate the expression using the assigned values
- \(\displaystyle \frac{(-4)^2+3}{7-2}+3((-4)+2)\)Replace every pronumeral, retaining the negative sign
- \(\displaystyle \frac{16+3}{7-2}+3((-4)+2)\)Evaluate the power before adding in the numerator
- \(\displaystyle \frac{19}{7-2}+3((-4)+2)\)Complete the numerator
- \(\displaystyle \frac{19}{5}+3((-4)+2)\)Complete the denominator
- \(\displaystyle \frac{19}{5}+3(-2)\)Complete the other grouped sum
- \(\displaystyle \frac{19}{5}-6\)Multiply the remaining factors
- \(\displaystyle \frac{19}{5}-\frac{30}{5}\)Write both terms with a common denominator
- \(\displaystyle -\frac{11}{5}\)Subtract the numerators and keep the exact result

Questions about this topic
Must every occurrence be replaced?+
Yes. A pronumeral has the same assigned value everywhere in the expression
Why are negative values bracketed?+
Brackets keep the sign attached to the value that is being squared, multiplied or divided
Can an exact answer be a decimal?+
Yes, if it represents the value without rounding. Otherwise keep an exact fraction
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 9 Mathematics, chapter 2: Linear equations
