Circular area extended through height
Use radius, not diameter. Keep exact π until the final requested rounding
- Recover radius Halve a given diameter \(\displaystyle r=d\div2\)
- Use consistent units Convert lengths before calculating or use a cubed factor to convert a finished volume
- Composite volume Add non-overlapping volumes or subtract the volume of a removed hole. Face areas are not volumes

Questions about this topic
Why do we square the radius?+
The cross-section is a circle, so its area uses the radius squared. Extending that area through the height gives the cylinder's volume
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 9 Mathematics, chapter 5: Measurement
