Cosine rule
Match the opposite side and included angle
- SAS Take the positive square root \(\displaystyle a^{2}=b^{2}+c^{2}-2bc\cos A\)
- SSS Use inverse cosine in the requested unit \(\displaystyle \cos A=\frac{b^{2}+c^{2}-a^{2}}{2bc}\)
- Check The largest side is opposite the largest angle; test triangle inequalities
Worked example
Find the side opposite a 120° included angle between sides 4 cm and 7 cm
- \(\displaystyle a^2=16+49+28=93,\qquad a=\sqrt{93}\,\mathrm{cm}\)The cosine is negative one half, so the final term is positive. The length is greater than the difference and less than the sum of the given sides
