Area and numerical integration
Define the region and distinguish exact values, approximations and certified accuracy
- Vertical strips Integrate upper minus lower; split wherever the order changes
- Horizontal strips Integrate right minus left with respect to y.
- Data Weight each adjacent mean height by its actual input gap
- Sign Geometric area uses positive contributions, not the absolute value of an unsplit signed total
- Verification Check domains and setup first. Numerical agreement is useful but is not a proof of error
Worked example
Find the bounded area between a reciprocal quadratic curve and a line
- \(\displaystyle \frac2{1+x^2}=1\quad\Rightarrow\quad x=-1,1\)Find both intersections and check the curve is above the line between them
- \(\displaystyle A=\int_{-1}^1\left(\frac2{1+x^2}-1\right)dx\)Use the positive vertical width of the intended region
- \(\displaystyle A=[2\arctan x-x]_{-1}^1=\pi-2\)Retain the exact expression; a decimal approximation is a separate representation

Questions about this topic
Must every integral be evaluated symbolically first?+
No. Numerical integration can evaluate a definite integral without a displayed primitive, after checking its domain and intended meaning
Is a trapezium result exact?+
It is exact for the stated linear interpolant. For an unknown curved function through the same samples it is generally an approximation
Are proof and technology tasks graded automatically?+
No. The model answers support written practice; they do not certify independent reasoning or actual tool operation
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 5: Integral calculus
