Angles between planes
Prove the section is perpendicular to the common edge
- Construction Two in-plane perpendiculars through one point on the common edge
- Smaller plane angle Take the acute or right angle between the resulting lines
- Oblique section Use sine/cosine rules on its actual triangle
- Spatial chain Find a base length first, then use a justified vertical right section
Worked example
Two in-plane perpendiculars to a common edge have lengths 3 and 5. Their endpoints are 7 units apart. Find the smaller plane angle
- \(\displaystyle \alpha=120^\circ,\qquad\varphi=180^\circ-120^\circ=60^\circ\)The question asks for the smaller angle between the planes, not the obtuse angle between the selected rays

Questions about this topic
Can two planes have a right angle?+
Yes. The smaller angle between distinct intersecting planes can equal 90°
Is an angle between planes the same as a line–plane angle?+
No. The constructions and required perpendicularity statements differ
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 7: Trigonometry and transformations
