Arrangement models
State order, repetition and equivalence conventions
- Stages Multiply numbers of permitted continuations
- Cases Add only disjoint cases, or explicitly remove overlaps
- Identical copies Divide by the factorial for each repeated multiplicity
- Circle For an unmarked circle with rotations equivalent and reflections distinct, the count is the factorial of one fewer than the number of objects
Worked example
Arrange six distinct objects in a line so two specified objects are not adjacent
- \(\displaystyle 6!=720\)All orders
- \(\displaystyle 2\cdot5!=240\)The adjacent pair is one block with two internal orders
- \(\displaystyle 720-240=480\)Remove exactly the adjacent arrangements

Questions about this topic
Does the product rule require independent events?+
No probability assumption is needed. The relevant condition is the number of permitted continuations at each stage
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 4: Discrete mathematics
