Fixed rules and changed generating means
Name the conditioning mean and the non-rejection event before calculating
- Type II Probability of non-rejection at a specified alternative mean
- Fixed boundary Find it from the null rule and retain it under the alternative
- Supplied tails α=pL+pR, not half of either separately given tail
- Reporting Keep guard digits; round the full requested quantity at the end
Worked example
A left-tail test has null mean 12, known SE 1 and rejection boundary 10. Calculate beta when the true mean is 9.
- \(\displaystyle \beta=\Pr_{\mu=9}(\overline X>10)=1-\Phi(1)\)The boundary is unchanged; the probability uses the alternative distribution
- \(\displaystyle \beta\approx0.1587,\qquad1-\beta\approx0.8413\)Type II error and power sum to 1 before rounding

Questions about this topic
Why do some examples give variance?+
The mean variance is σ²/n; then take its positive square root for SE. A non-square n is valid
Does non-rejection prove the null?+
No. Its probability under an alternative is precisely the Type II error considered here
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 8: Probability and statistical inference
