Linear matrix operations
Add equal-order matrices entry by entry and apply each scalar to every entry before combining
- Compatibility Addition/subtraction requires identical dimensions
- Scaling Multiply every entry by the scalar
- Signs Subtract the entire second matrix, including its negative entries
Worked example
For the matrices A and B, find 3A+B.
- \(\displaystyle 3A=\begin{pmatrix}6&-3\\0&9\end{pmatrix}\)Scale all four entries
- \(\displaystyle 3A+B=\begin{pmatrix}7&1\\-2&14\end{pmatrix}\)Add corresponding positions

Questions about this topic
May I combine the scalars before the matrices?+
Only a justified distributive factorisation permits that. In general 2A+3B cannot be simplified to 5(A+B)
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 4: Discrete mathematics
