Solve and interpret affine recurrences
Use u₀=s, uₙ₊₁=ruₙ+c with fixed r≠0
- General explicit rule For r≠1, L=c/(1−r) and uₙ=L+(s−L)rⁿ. For r=1 use s+nc
- Limiting behaviour Check the initial deviation from equilibrium and the magnitude/sign of the multiplier
- Identifiability Three nonconstant consecutive exact terms identify r,c only under a stated fixed affine model
- Modelling Define the state, units, census timing, parameter assumptions and validation data
Worked example
For u₀=10 and uₙ₊₁=−uₙ/2+6, solve explicitly and find u₄
- \(\displaystyle L=\frac6{1+1/2}=4\)Solve for the equilibrium
- \(\displaystyle u_0-L=10-4=6,\quad u_n=4+6\left(-\frac12\right)^n\)Find the initial deviation
- \(\displaystyle u_4=4+\frac6{16}=\frac{35}{8}\)The even-index value lies above 4; the sequence converges to 4

Questions about this topic
Does a fitted recurrence prove a model?+
No. Its assumptions need checking against the situation and observations beyond those used to fit it
Is an equilibrium always unique?+
For r≠1 it is unique. For r=1,c=0 every value is an equilibrium; for r=1,c≠0 none exists
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 4: Discrete mathematics
