Iterate exactly
Define the initial value and one update
- State roles r multiplies the preceding term; c is added afterwards
- Index zero u_N follows N updates from u₀
- Precision Keep exact fractions or full stored precision, rounding only when the question requests it
Worked example
For u₀=−2 and uₙ₊₁=3uₙ+4, calculate u₁ and u₂
- \(\displaystyle u_1=3(-2)+4=-2\)The initial value is already an equilibrium
- \(\displaystyle u_2=3(-2)+4=-2\)It remains constant despite a multiplier greater than one

Questions about this topic
Is the added change a common difference?+
Only when r=1 or c=u₀=0. In general u_(n+1)−u_n=(r−1)u_n+c depends on the current value
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 4: Discrete mathematics
