Financial recurrence conventions
State the timing before applying a formula
- After-interest flow Use a signed cash flow \(\displaystyle B_{n+1}=RB_n+C\)
- Before-interest flow The fixed term in expanded form is the product of R and C \(\displaystyle B_{n+1}=R(B_n+C)\)
- Scope The practice bank encodes supplied constant-rate models with end-of-period flows. Independent validation and changing conditions are separate tasks
Worked example
An ideal balance starts at 800 and earns 1% each month before a deposit of 40. Find B₂
- \(\displaystyle B_1=848\)One interest-and-deposit update
- \(\displaystyle B_2=1.01(848)+40=896.48\)Keep full precision; this value is exact in the stated model
- \(\displaystyle B_2=800(1.01)^2+40\frac{(1.01)^2-1}{0.01}=896.48\)The explicit and recursive calculations agree

Questions about this topic
Can a repayment model continue below zero?+
A negative balance would no longer mean outstanding debt. Specify a final adjusted payment or another stopping rule
Should I round the balance after every step?+
Only if the problem explicitly defines per-period rounding. Otherwise retain full precision and round the requested final amount
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 4: Discrete mathematics
