Matrix products
Use row-by-column multiplication with compatible dimensions, and preserve factor order
- Definition The inner dimensions must match; use row-by-column dot products \(\displaystyle (m\times n)(n\times p)\to m\times p\)
- Order AB and BA can differ or one can be undefined
- Powers Repeated multiplication of a square matrix; its zeroth power is the identity \(\displaystyle A^0=I\)
Worked example
Compute AB for the matrices A and B.
- \(\displaystyle AB=\begin{pmatrix}2(1)+1(2)&2(4)+1(0)\\-1(1)+3(2)&-1(4)+3(0)\end{pmatrix}\)Each cell uses a full row and column
- \(\displaystyle AB=\begin{pmatrix}4&8\\5&-4\end{pmatrix}\)The dimensions are 2×2.

Questions about this topic
Can I cancel the same matrix from the left of both sides of an equation?+
If A has an appropriate inverse, left multiplication can justify cancellation. Without that hypothesis, cancellation may fail
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 4: Discrete mathematics
