Matrix notation and transpose
Read row and column indices, transpose a matrix and distinguish its shape from its special algebraic properties
- Order Rows × columns; equality compares matching positions
- Transpose (Aᵀ)ᵢⱼ=Aⱼᵢ; dimensions reverse
- Identity Iₙ has diagonal ones and all other entries zero
Worked example
Transpose a row matrix and identify its new dimensions
- \(\displaystyle R^T=\begin{pmatrix}4\\-2\\7\end{pmatrix}\)The 1×3 row becomes a 3×1 column
