Matrix equations
Isolate an unknown matrix by preserving multiplication order and then substitute the solution back
- Addend X+A=B ⇒ X=B−A
- Left factor AX=B ⇒ X=A⁻¹B when A is invertible
- Right factor XA=B ⇒ X=BA⁻¹ when A is invertible
Worked example
Solve AX+C=B for invertible A and verify the expression
- \(\displaystyle AX+C=A[A^{-1}(B-C)]+C\)Substitute the proposed answer
- \(\displaystyle =I(B-C)+C=B\)Use associativity and the inverse on the correct side

Questions about this topic
Does det(A)=0 prove AX=B has no solution?+
No. The inverse method is unavailable, and consistency must be checked separately
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
