Confidence intervals for a mean
Separate a fixed parameter from random interval endpoints
- Positive critical value For a two-sided equal-tail level C, use the inverse standard normal distribution at the cumulative probability halfway between C and 1.
- Known σ x̄±zσ/√n; exact unrounded coverage for iid normal observations
- Estimated σ x̄±zs/√n is the stated large-sample approximate z construction
- Width 2 zSE; higher confidence widens the interval, larger n narrows it at fixed σ
- Meaning Confidence describes repeated coverage of fixed μ, not the range of individual values
Worked example
For an iid normal sample with n=64, x̄=24.6 and known σ=4, construct a 95% mean interval
- \(\displaystyle \operatorname{SE}=4/8=0.5\)Use the known population SD
- \(\displaystyle I=[24.6-0.5z,\ 24.6+0.5z]\)Use the unrounded quantile inside both endpoints
- \(\displaystyle I\approx[23.62,25.58]\)Report endpoints to two decimal places; the confidence level describes the interval procedure

Questions about this topic
Must exactly 95 of 100 intervals cover?+
No. The observed coverage count varies between repeated experiments
Does a wider interval mean more precision?+
At fixed model and sample, a wider interval gives less numerical precision but can correspond to greater confidence
Can I infer the confidence level from endpoints alone?+
No. The standard error and construction are also needed
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Specialist Mathematics, chapter 8: Probability and statistical inference
