Three-source normal tails
Combine, take a square root, then standardise the requested event
- Mean Sum signed weighted means and the shift
- Variance Sum squared-weight variances under independence
- Tail Use Φ(z) for a lower tail and1−Φ(z) for an upper tail
Worked example
For independent X∼N(2,4),Y∼N(−1,4),Z∼N(3,16), find Pr(X−2Y+Z+1>11)
- \(\displaystyle z=(11-8)/6=1/2\)Divide by SD6, not variance36.
- \(\displaystyle \Pr(W>11)=1-\Phi(1/2)\approx0.3085\)The event is an upper tail
